Behind the Scenes of Inkcandescent: Creating a Fine Art Tattoo Exhibition
Every exhibition has a story—and Inkcandescent is no exception.
On November 23, 2025, I’ll be unveiling a collection of fine art tattoo portraits that have been months in the making. But behind every finished piece lies a journey: one that began with a single idea and has grown into a cultural event.
Here’s what it takes to bring a project like Inkcandescent to life.
The Vision
I’ve always believed that tattoos deserve more than casual snapshots or social media posts. They are powerful markers of identity, resilience, and memory.
The vision for Inkcandescent was to create an exhibition where tattooed individuals could see themselves reflected as fine art—captured with the same reverence we give to paintings, sculptures, or museum pieces.
The Photography Sessions
Over the past year, I’ve photographed participants in my private Surrey studio.
Each session is an immersive experience, beginning with professional hair and makeup, and continuing through guided posing under cinematic lighting. My role as the photographer is to draw out presence, emotion, and confidence—ensuring that every portrait feels both powerful and deeply personal.
By the end, participants don’t just leave with a photo. They leave having seen themselves in a new light.
From Studio to Gallery
The transition from camera to exhibition wall is an art form in itself.
Every image is carefully retouched—not to erase imperfections, but to enhance the authenticity and beauty of both the person and their ink. Each final portrait is printed and matted to archival fine art standards, ensuring it will last for generations.
The curation process is equally intentional. I’ve selected pieces that, together, tell a broader story of resilience, transformation, and identity within tattoo culture.
The Exhibition Magazine
Alongside the gallery walls, attendees will have the option to purchase access to purchase a copy of the Inkcandescent magazine. This collector’s piece features every participant’s portrait and story, making it a way to take the exhibition home.
It’s more than a keepsake—it’s an extension of the legacy each participant has chosen to share.
What Awaits You on November 23/25
On exhibition night, the gallery will transform into a space of intimacy, power, and beauty.
You’ll step into a world where tattoos are elevated to fine art, where stories leap beyond the skin, and where identity is celebrated in its most authentic form.
This one-night-only experience is the culmination of months of artistry, intention, and collaboration. And I can’t wait to share it with you.
